THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF ENGINEERS (NSE) JALINGO BRANCH ON TECHNICAL VISIT TO KIRI DAM.









The NSE Jalingo Branch has visited the Kiri Dam on 23rd of February, 2017as part of its scheduled technical visit. The Dam is situated on the River Gongola near Kiri town in Shelleng Local Government Area of Adamawa State, North Eastern Region of Nigeria. The Dam Manager, Engr. Augustine Okoye, MNSE welcomed the NSE Jalingo Branch members to the facility. Engr. Okoye briefed the delegation that the Dam was designed for the purpose of impounding sufficient water during the months of high river flow to meet the Irrigation needs of Savannah Sugar Company LTD. During the dry season which generally extends from November to June each year. He further informed NSE members that the Dam is an Embankment type with a height of 20m above river bed level, a length of 1250m and a Freeboard above Normal Top Water Level (NTWL) of 3.5m. The Dam has a Concrete spillway, Radial gates with 6 openings, each having a 12.75m width of opening and 37m approximate overall height. The Dam which solely serves Savannah Sugar Company has 2 Canals of 2.5m x 3m Dimention with a discharge capacity of 19m3/s. The Head of delegation, Engr. D. U Adamu expressed gratitude to the Manager and his staff for their cooperation and effort in taking the members on a tour of their facility.
